Hi

I was just wondering if physical activity and diet data are available from the shhs dataset? They're included in the list of variables available from the parent cohorts ref: Table 1 in Quan SF, Sleep, 2012 "The Sleep Heart Health Study: Design, Rationale and Methods"; but I can't seem to find them in the actual dataset.

Please advise

Regards, Winda

Winda,

I see the Table you are referencing. Nothing comes to mind for me regarding those domains, and I can't find anything of much use in the SHHS data dictionary. I went ahead and emailed a couple of the paper authors to see if they could provide any guidance.

I'll get back in touch when I hear back.

Mike

Winda,

It looks as if these are B/C variables that were available in select cohorts, but were not compiled and published with the main SHHS data sources and A variables.

From S. Quan:

In any event, these data are SHHS cohort specific and need to be requested from individual cohorts if they are available. Not every cohort has the data.

Your question spurred an additional question about whether we (the NSRR group) should attempt to compile some of these additional data domains from the SHHS cohorts in order to share these out to our users. That would obviously take awhile, but I will try to revisit this thread if anything ever come of it!

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

I understand. Thank you very much for your prompt response! We are trying to assess the relationship between obesity and sleepiness. After creating a causal diagram, we know that we'll need to adjust for physical activity, and less importantly diet/shift-work status; to obtain an unbiased estimate of the association between obesity and sleepiness.

i haven't seen a publication on diet/occupation variables using the SHHS dataset but i have seen one with physical activity Quan S,2007, Sleep breath, association of physical activity with sleep-disordered breathing. Given that this data was already compiled for publication; would it be convenient to obtain this data from Prof.Quan?

Regarding the other variables (e.g. diet, occupation, income, etc); we do think they're worth exploring given the increasingly prominent link between lifestyle, work and sleep health. However, we do understand and agree that obtaining data this old from different parent cohorts can be very tricky and challenging!

Thank you very much for all your help Winda

Winda,

Dr. Quan does have the files, but he does not have permission to disseminate those data. We are arranging an NSRR Stakeholders meeting for this month and this may be one of the topics at hand. The option open to both of us at this point in time is to reach back out to the parent cohorts to (re)seek access to these specialized data points and to obtain permission for analyzing such data. I think the purpose of our internal discussion will be to see whether it is worthwhile to try and invest the time and effort to obtain additional data (e.g. physical activity) to somehow bring under the more "open" umbrella here at sleepdata.org. If we make any progress I will provide updates.

Winda,

There hasn't been any movement on my end toward requesting the SHHS diet/activity data from the individual cohorts.

The topic of soliciting outside data sources for deposition on sleepdata.org was discussed at the user group meeting in October. We agreed to go this route, with our test case coming from Dr. Peppard in Wisconsin. I think 2016 will see us hammering out and refining this process, at which point we will likely reach out to other groups to try and bring them on as collaborators/sharers.

If you wanted to explore obtaining these data on your own, I think BioLINCC would be a good place to start. You can find most of the cohorts that took part in SHHS there, e.g.

https://biolincc.nhlbi.nih.gov/studies/chs/?q=chs https://biolincc.nhlbi.nih.gov/studies/aric/?q=aric https://biolincc.nhlbi.nih.gov/studies/framcohort/?q=framingham
