HCHS variables
This variable estimates Glomerular filtration rate, based on serum cystatin C, serum creatinine, and demographics gender, age and race (black vs. nonblack).
Note: This variable was derived from race and was not asked as a separate demographic question. At the time of SHHS Visit 1, race and ethnicity were collected together in a single question. This variable was derived later on when the datasets were prepared for deposition in Biologic Specimen and Data Repository Information Coordinating Center (BioLINCC).
Note from MESA Coordinating Center: It is recommended that Investigators make use of the terminology "race/ethnicity" when publishing or presenting variable race1c results (e.g. descriptive summaries, associations, ...). It has been noted that Chinese and Hispanic are not race groups, and that race itself is an ill-defined, non-scientific concept.
"Hispanic or Latino" is defined as a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race.
