10.1.6 Unpacking, Cleaning, and Disinfecting

1. Open the package containing the monitor and accompanying paperwork.
2. Remove the paperwork and set aside from the surface protector.
3. Remove the plastic bag containing the nasal cannula and thermistor from the unit.
4. Discard the plastic bag and nasal cannula and inspect the monitor for signs of damage in case the corresponding sleep study has poor quality.
5. Disinfect the thermistor and package for sterilization.
6. Use the CaviWipe towelette to wipe the wires attached to the proxy. Re-usable belts will also need to be wiped down with a disinfecting wipe. During this cleaning, turn the towelette frequently.
7. After the unit has been disinfected, place it on its corresponding paperwork.
8. Allow it to air-dry.
9. Use an adhesive remover to wipe down the oximetry cable especially wear the adhesive band aid attaches and the tape.
10. Remove gloves, placing them with the dirty items on the protector.
11. Placing your hands under the protector, gather or roll it up to enclose all the dirty disposable items.
12. Discard into the appropriate trash receptacle.
13. Wash your hands before downloading the data.
